April is Native Plant Month for Connecticut

The Connecticut Legislature added a designation of April as Native Plant Month to Public Act 25-59: An Act Designating Various Days, Weeks and Months, paragraph 120. The Act amends the general statutes to  proclaim the month of April of each year as Connecticut Native Plant Month in recognition of the importance of native plants to the state’s rich biological heritage. This is an important milestone for environmentalists, conservationists, and our citizens across the state to raise awareness of the importance of native plants and their role in the State’s natural food web.  Birds, butterflies, moths, and other small insects rely on native plants for their existence and to sustain a healthy ecosystem.

While Wild Ones would like every month to be for native plants, this sentiment is still not the norm.  Therefore, we appreciate that this legislation anchors the month of April on our calendars for planning purposes and raising awareness of the importance of native plants for Connecticut.
